Starting out strong in 2022

Hummingbird feeding on a red glass feeder.

For those following my aiming for 100 rejections in a year adventure . . . I am up to 14 rejections and 3 personalized ones asking to see more in the future. Most of the rejections simply wash over me, but in this early rejection group, there was one that kind of stung. It’s one of those journals that I thought my piece was perfect for, but ultimately, I got a boring form rejection. I always find that strange and it happens almost every time that I send out a story that I think is perfect for a certain journal. It never is! Oh well. Guess I should learn from that.

I recently had two pieces published and if you do not subscribe to my newsletter you may not have seen them yet. Here they are:

From Scratch (may take a moment or two or three to load)- Harpur Palate (online ahead of print, buy issue 20.2, and get the print issue)

Emergency Room Diagnosis – Variant Lit

I’m thrilled that these two pieces found such great homes. Let me know what you think if you have the chance to read one of them.

Okay, I’ll go back to watching my hummingbird feeder and checking my submissions to add to my #100rejections list.

Be well.

  1. This is such a lovely project. I too am ‘aiming to fail’ this year, in hopes that it will spur me to do more.

And yes! I can totally relate to thinking something’s amazing then ending up being rejected in the most anti-climactic way. And the stories I think are crap end up getting published.

That’s motivating to me though, because that teaches me to just keep plugging. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
